Really old illustration of a Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis). I’m pretty sure I started to colour this with watercolours and colour pencils, but I can’t find it.

Lindsey Carr ~ Halcyon Days
The term ‘Halcyon’ is rarely used outside of the saying ‘Halcyon days’, but the term itself means Happy or Carefree and originally referred to a bird of Greek myth and a period of 14 days of calm weather around the Winter Solstice. The mythical creature was commonly associated with the Kingfisher which were believed at the time to nest at sea and have the ability to calm the tides. (Kingfishers actually nest in holes and other cavities) The birds portrayed are the Belted Kingfisher and the Common (or River) Kingfisher. Alcedo atthis, Eurasian Kingfisher, diving for a snack. These birds are incredible fishers, I’ve watched them diving on documentary films and it’s a truly impressive sight. I really don’t know how the photograph I used for ref was done. But the result is stunning and it was a pleasure to paint.
I focused most of my attention on the bubbles here. They took much of my imagination and inventiveness, and a few unsuccessful trials of the highlighting, until I finally got that look. Enjoy!

Today’s warmup - kingfisher, drawn from reference I found on Wikipedia.
Very photo-referenced. Practising my bird-drawing skills (because birds) and my patience when it comes to drawing detailed things. Inspired by a recent trip to an exhibition of bird-paintings. -
It’s been a nice 30 days of winter vacation.
Other than the books i read, this is all that i’ve managed to accomplish. 2 sketches that took under 15 minutes and tiny finished bird. Hopefully (or not) procrastination during homework will lead me to continue trying to finish this moleskine.
