This is not a deformed specimen like certain octopuses and squid, but a mature male of the species Amphorateuthis alveatus. Other members of the squid clade Heteroteuthinae exhibit unusual arm morphology, although not to the absolutely bizarre degree of this species. I wonder why cephalopods don’t do crazy things like this more often.

Model of Human Immunodeficiency Virus: “This human immunodeficiency virus model summarizes the results from more than 100 of the latest scientific publications in the fields of virology, X-ray analysis and NMR spectroscopy. The depicted spatial configurations of 17 different viral and cellular proteins found in the HIV particle are in strict accordance with known 3D structures. The viral membrane in the model includes 160,000 lipid molecules of 8 different types in the proportion found in the HIV particle.”

In this model of the virus, the grey things came from the host, and the orange from the virus. This model won best scientific illustration of the year in 2010, and it’s easy to see why.

What an ingenious virus.

Listening to “a storm of swords” audiobook while drawing. It’s all so horrible! George R. r. Martin is ripping my heart to shreds. Q.Q will be forever depressed when I look at this drawing later in life.

The worlds of architecture and scientific illustration collided when Macoto Murayama was studying at Miyagi University in Japan. The two have a great deal in common, as far as the artist’s eye could see; both architectural plans and scientific illustrations are, as he puts it, “explanatory figures” with meticulous attention paid to detail. “An image of a thing presented with massive and various information is not just visually beautiful, it is also possible to catch an elaborate operation involved in the process of construction of this thing,” Murayama once said in an interview.

… is an extinct genus of large flightless bird that lived during the late Paleocene and Eocene epochs of the Cenozoic. It was named in 1855, after Gaston Planté, who had discovered the first fossils in Argile Plastique formation deposits at Meudon near Paris, France.

In the 1870s, the famous American paleontologist Edward Drinker Cope discovered another, more complete set of fossils in North America, and named them Diatryma, which of course turned out later to be Gastornis.

Gastornis parisiensis measured on average 1.75 metres (5.7 ft) tall, but large individuals grew up to 2 metres (6.6 ft) tall. The Gastornis had a remarkably huge beak with a slightly hooked top, which was taken as evidence suggesting that it was carnivorous. Gastornis had large powerful legs, with large, taloned feet, which also were considered in support of the theory that it was a predator…

The new mammal species researchers described is an anthracothere, Arretotherium meridionale, an even-toed hooved mammal previously thought to be related to living hippos and intensively studied on the basis of its hypothetical relationship with whales.

About the size of a cow, the mammal would have lived in a semi-aquatic environment in Central America

“With the evolution of new terrestrial corridors like this peninsula connecting North America with Central America, this is one of the most amazing examples of the different kind of paths land animals can take (…) Somehow this anthracothere is similar to anthracotheres from other continents like northern Africa and northeastern Asia.” Say Aldo Rinco, student at U of Florida.

Every part of the tree is toxic due to it’s taxine alkaloids, although the fruit and seeds are the most poisonous part. Consumption of this tree can lead to symptoms, including dizziness, dry mouth, dilation of the pupils, weakness, an irregular heart rhythm and possibly death.
